TENTH ANNUAL GARDEN DAY(K-3)

Florida Standards: VA, AFNR, SC

Monday, February 5, 2024

Garden Day programmatically captures Ann Norton’s vision for her home to remain a place that fosters transdisciplinary learning in a beautiful tropical sanctuary.  Here, the garden transforms into a two-acre ecological classroom for 250 Title 1 students to immerse themselves in an urban oasis and objectively study the science of the garden.  This integrated program encourages discovery-based learning, as students embrace a vital sense of place while exploring native flora and fauna to unearth the delicate balance that all living things from palms to pollinators play in our environment.  By taking the lessons outside, this organic teaching style promotes intrinsic motivation to learn and nurtures our next generation of environmentally conscious students. This beautiful day, filled with meaningful, hands-on presentations, offers a variety of experiences for students to understand the benefits of nature, our South Florida ecosystems and healthy eating. Students and teachers have voiced their love of being “in a mysterious jungle” and not wanting the day to end
