Budding Readers:

Fifteenth Annual Literacy Day (K-5)

Fall, 2021

Florida Standards: VA, LA, SC

Now in its fifteenth year, Literacy Day invites more than 300 Title 1 students to participate in an interactive and immersive program designed to push the boundaries of traditional education and learn in ANSG’s historic gallery and green oasis.  Literacy plays an integral role in the foundational building blocks of learning. Budding Readers supports childhood development, in efforts to address real deficits in Palm Beach County, where nearly half of third grade students read below grade level.

Literacy Day introduces young learners to a diverse collection of nationally known professionals ranging from authors, artists, musicians, joined by local law enforcement, chefs and technology specialists, depicting how literacy is essential to success in school and beyond.  By utilizing performing and visual arts as the platform for these comprehensive introductions to early literacy, students actively identify important vocabulary, engage in interactive storytelling, and writing.  The mission of this day is specifically designed to inspire every student to embrace the impact of becoming a lifelong reader.

Literacy Day is made possible by the generosity of Cynthia Sulzberger.

Teachers and students alike voted it their favorite school visit and can’t wait to return next year.

“Thank you for an absolutely fabulous field trip! In my 16 years of teaching, I believe it is the best I have ever had the pleasure of attending. All staff and students agree with me on that! Kudos to you and all participating who made Literacy Day at the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden a HUGE success! We can’t wait until next year!”
